Guilin, Friday Morning

If you were getting tired of historical monuments and city life, Guilin is for you: it's a city surrounded by stunning natural beauty. Today is for hiking, and riverboat cruising. Well, after we stuff ourselves with dim sum down in the hotel breakfast buffet.

"And we have a few hours," Steve said stoutly. "I'm sure we'll get it."

Or die trying.

"They sell them frozen back home if we don't." He was so helpful.

The chef didn't speak much English, but seemed to know "frozen" by the horrified look on his face.

"We'll get it," Steve said, jaw clenching stubbornly as he rolled out his dough too thin.

Tony ducked his head to keep from smiling as he spent way too long trying to get the perfect diameter for the dumpling.

"At least we've got the filling thing down?"

"That part we are very good at," Steve said.

Mixing things in bowls: very little chance of explosions.

...yes. Little chance of explosions. Tony would need to make sure Rhodey never talked about his time at MIT.

He bit his lip, trying to fill the dough without squishing everything out. He squished most of it out and it was super lopsided. Which wasn't great.

The chef supervising them was making an elaborate crimping pattern to remind him what filling was inside.

Steve's kind of looked like what happened when a kid played with Playdoh. Also not great.

"...they're still edible." HE HAD SUCH HOPE. "It doesn't have to look amazing. It's a first draft."

"That's a good way to look at it," Steve said, starting to roll out another circle verrrrry slowly.

He'd starve to death if he was in charge of making enough dumplings to feed himself.

Or end up just cooking the filling to eat.

"Hell, you should have seen the first time I tried soldering," Tony said, watching the teacher roll in case there were new secrets he could learn. "It was a mess all around."

"Yes but you were also, what? Seven?" Steve asked.

"...yeah?" He totally wasn't picking up on the point there.

Steve smiled at him fondly. "Most people are complete disasters at 7. We are...not 7 any more."

"Most of the people at MIT were disasters to start with too," Tony insisted. "Everyone is when they start something new. Even us geniuses."

"You and your logic," Steve teased.

"Hey, less chance of second degree burns with this," he joked back. "We're doing great."

"That's amazingly reassuring," Steve said with a snicker, giving his new dumpling dough--his new oval dumpling dough--a dubious look.

Tony pushed the filling over to him before attempting his own dumpling skin. "Years and years of tradition, destroyed by the clumsy Avengers."

Steve snorted. "I'm not sure our job is what's holding us back here."

"I don't know... Avenging doesn't make for great cooks." Unless you were avenging some meat?

"But we are incredibly take-out orderers," Steve said.

That was JARVIS, Steve.

"It takes a certain type of person," Tony agreed, squinting at his sort of asterisk shaped dumpling.

"That one's neat," Steve said, grinning. "Not traditional, but it looks really neat."

"Neat might be the goal for us." As long as it was edible.

"Looking more like ravioli," Steve agreed. "Call it fusion?"
