Guilin, Friday Morning
If you were getting tired of historical monuments and city life, Guilin is for you: it's a city surrounded by stunning natural beauty. Today is for hiking, and riverboat cruising. Well, after we stuff ourselves with dim sum down in the hotel breakfast buffet.

"Sounds good to me," Tip agreed. She gave the waitress a smile as well, then pointed to some of the cakes and snacks she saw at other tables. "Do you recommend any?" she asked.
The waitress tilted her head, looking to what Tip was pointing at, and with a little bit more pointing and carefully worded questions, she nodded, bringing back several sampler sized treats to go with their tea selections. Tip's "thank you" in Mandarin wasn't super well pronounced, but it got a smile and a nod from the waitress anyway.

"You've practiced some phrases too?" she asked Tip.

"Just the basic pleasantries," Tip said. "Hello, goodbye, please, thank you. My best friend back home speaks a language humans can't even imitate, and I know it bugs him sometimes not to get to hear people speaking it in his own home. So I figured, if I was coming to China, I should learn at least a little bit of Chinese."

She had even known a few Radchaai who had understood that, even if those were the exception.
Also thanking the waitress in Chinese as she was offered the small bowl of tea, Breq then continued: "I appreciate that the school arranged this trip."
